Curriculum Overview
The Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency is structured to train complete IR/DR physicians through a progressive curriculum that combines rigorous diagnostic radiology education with increasing clinical and procedural responsibility in interventional radiology.
Residents complete a Transitional Year during PGY-1, followed by three years of integrated DR/IR training during PGY-2 - PGY-4, and two years of dedicated IR training during PGY-5 and PGY-6.
A major strength of the program is that IR residents train within a busy, well-established Diagnostic Radiology residency during their early years. This provides the imaging volume, diagnostic depth, and breadth of pathology that are essential to modern IR practice.
PGY-1
Residents complete a Transitional Year that provides broad clinical experience and a strong foundation in patient care before entering radiology training.
PGY 2 – PGY 4
Integrated IR residents train alongside the Diagnostic Radiology residency and complete the same core diagnostic curriculum. Training includes nuclear medicine, GI/GU imaging, body CT, inpatient fluoroscopy, neuroradiology, cardiopulmonary imaging, mammography, pediatrics, musculoskeletal imaging, MRI, women’s imaging, and AIRP.
Each year also includes one dedicated month of interventional radiology, allowing residents to build early familiarity with procedures, consults, inpatient management, and IR workflow while continuing to develop as diagnosticians. PGY-2 residents begin with weekend rounding and inpatient service exposure, while dedicated IR call weekends are introduced in PGY-3 and continue with increasing responsibility through PGY-4.
PGY 5 – PGY 6
The PGY-5 and PGY-6 years are dedicated to interventional radiology training. After the Core Exam in the fall of PGY-5, residents transition into predominantly IR-based rotations across the inpatient hospital services and outpatient-based labs. Senior residents rotate through Baptist Memphis, Baptist DeSoto, and the Vascular Interventional Physicians outpatient sites in Memphis and Southaven, with added experiences in Neuro IR, ICU, and night float.
These years emphasize procedural breadth, consultation, peri-procedural care, inpatient management, clinic-based decision making, and service leadership. During PGY-5 and PGY-6, residents also have access to elective opportunities, including Pediatric IR, Vascular Surgery, and Rural IR experiences.
